Confidex expands into wireless sensor networking technologies
Tampere, Finland, January 25th, 2010 - Confidex, a leading manufacturer of UHF Gen2 Passive RFID tags, including a versatile portfolio of tags for IT Asset Tags, Returnable Transit Items (RTIs), and Industrial Assets, has joined the global DASH7 Alliance that is fostering the new wireless sensor networking technology based on the ISO 18000-7 “DASH7” standard.
Products with DASH7 capabilities will be able to communicate with each other and exchange information from their sensors. These products can be read from long distances by utilizing the widely available 433MHz frequency band. DASH7 technology has already been proven in demanding applications with chaotic conditions, e.g. supply chain management in the defense industry.
"Adding the sensor networks to our future offering strengthens our position as the leading RFID Company in demanding industrial applications. I believe that together with our existing products, new technologies such as DASH7 enable our customers to find the right RFID solution from us regardless of read distances or other demands," says Jarkko Miettinen, Vice President of Technology Development at Confidex.
DASH7 is a new wireless sensor networking technology that evolved from a combination of existing radio-frequency identification and sensing technologies used in the defense industry. DASH7 technology provides read ranges of 2km or more, 10 year battery life, penetration of concrete walls, multi-hop, sensor capabilities, and a globally available frequency, 433 MHz. DASH7 can be used with a variety of devices, from stand-alone DASH7 "tags" monitoring goods flowing through an electronic company's worldwide supply chain to mobile phone-based readers allowing businesses to monitor the energy usage in their buildings.
”We are excited that Confidex has joined the DASH7 Alliance’s growing roster of industry leaders,” said Patrick Burns, president of the DASH7 Alliance. “Our mission is to make the benefits of DASH7 wireless sensor networking a reality for both government and commercial organizations in 2010.”

Confidex supplies contactless tickets to Atlanta
Tampere, Finland – March 9th, 2010 – Confidex, the leading supplier of contactless Limited Use tickets and RFID tags, announced today that it has been supplying the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority or MARTA, with its Limited Use contactless tickets since August 2009 as the sole supplier.
The ISO 14443-A based Paper Contactless Tickets made by Confidex were taken into use in MARTA’s mass transit system consisting of bus and rail networks after Confidex won the public tender in 2009.
MARTA is the principal rapid-transit system in the Atlanta metropolitan area and the ninth largest in the United States. It started off in 1971 as strictly a bus system; MARTA operates a network of bus routes linked to a rapid transit system consisting of 48 miles (77 km) of rail track with 38 train stations. As of 2008, the system had an average of 200,000 passengers each day.
“Approximately nine months ago, MARTA partnered with Confidex as the new supplier of Limited Use Breeze tickets,” said MARTA Assistant General Manager of Finance and Chief Financial Officer Davis Allen. “The transition process went smoothly, and Confidex continues to provide attentive, timely and thorough customer service in our day-to-day operations. We look forward to our continued partnership.”
The Confidex Contactless Paper tickets are very high quality and 100% tested at the Confidex factory prior to shipment. The Confidex Contactless Paper tickets can be printed and personalized according to the individual customer’s requirements and the delivery format can be either single cut as in the case of MARTA, or reel or fan folded.
“We are pleased to be in the business with MARTA, one of the leading adopters of contactless fare collection technology,“ said Bill Compitello, Confidex Director of Sales, Americas. “Being the sole supplier for MARTA for the last nine months has proven our capability to serve US customers with the quality and support needed for successful transit ticketing operations.”

Confidex releases Confidex Captura – Just click it on and secure your asset!
Tampere, Finland, March 30, 2010 - Confidex, a leading manufacturer of UHF Gen2 Passive RFID tags, including a versatile portfolio of tags for IT Assets, Returnable Transit Items (RTIs), and Industrial Assets, announced today its newest UHF RFID product, the Confidex Captura. The newest member of the Confidex Class 1 Gen 2 tag portfolio steps into an unprecedented level in both C1G2 tag security and usability. The tag comes with both mechanical and electrical seal functions and is extremely easy and fast to attach. As there is no need for adhesives, screws or other fixing tools, it is simple to calculate the total cost of ownership for Captura. Just click, secure and tag your asset!
In Rental Returnable Transit Item (RTI) pools, the counterfeit RTI’s inside the pool cause extra cost. The design of the Confidex Captura incorporates both mechanical and electrical seal functions; when the tag is removed or the mechanical seal is broken, the tag won’t function properly. By tagging the RTI’s with the Confidex Captura, the asset authenticity can be verified. In addition to usage in authentication and proof of origin data verification of assets, the tags are suitable for normal RTI and asset management applications for example in the automotive industry, logistics and retail supply chains. With large quantities of different types of metal containers in circulation, one of the advantages of the Captura is its generic method of attachment.
When installing thousands and hundreds thousands of tags, the tag commissioning cost must be calculated into the total cost of ownership. Tag encoding, fixing adhesives and the resources used for fixing the tag increases the investment. In some cases the tag fixing costs can even exceed the cost of the tag itself. The Confidex Captura is fixed in a few seconds without any additional fixing materials. It fits to most of the RTI’s where there is a place to lock the hook.
When required, the Captura can be delivered as encoded and equipped with a barcode according to the project requirements. As the Captura can be taken into use directly from the box in a few seconds, it is easy to calculate the return on investment and the total cost of the ownership of the tags.
The Confidex Captura provides reliable identification in 3 meter (9,8ft) wide RFID gates. It is designed to be fixed on metal structures and its intelligent patent pending design makes use of the tagged object to achieve the best possible RF performance. The Captura has a small robust design with durable weather tolerant materials. Thanks to its hanging structure it stays intact and simply sways in the case of mechanical impacts.
“There is a strong demand arising from the real life RFID implementations for durable tag solutions with easy and fast fixing in order to lower down the total cost of ownership.” says Hanna Kosunen, Product Line Manager for Hard Tags and Special Labels “The Confidex Captura forms a unique combination of a totally new level in security, RF functionality and high usability for encapsulated UHF RFID tags”.
Confidex will showcase the Captura starting from April 14th onwards at the RFID Journal Live! In Orlando, Florida.
